Last Nail in the Coffin
By Carole | June 18, 2008
My friend Irene Lagan, who works for Vatican Radio and writes for Insider Catholic, visited me in Ireland last week in the run-up to the Lisbon Referendum. Here is the article she wrote for Insider Catholic.
She also had an interview with David Quinn on Vatican Radio, which is available on audio, here. I’ve had trouble getting this one open, but hopefully it will work for you.

What’s going on with the Cardinal with respect to his support for the Lisbon treaty?

Hi Father,
I wouldn’t necessarily read the Cardinal’s remark as the reporter evidently did.
The Irish Bishops published a statement prior to the vote on Lisbon, which basically said, ‘Read the treaty, follow your conscience, and oh by the way, here are some Catholic principles to keep in mind.’ There were a few Catholic principles that didn’t get much attention, notably that of subsidiarity which keeps local decisions local. The Lisbon treaty (and the EU already) proposes a very centralized government that does a lot of micromanaging. It would have impacted Irish fishing rights, bog rights, funeral rites, etc. ad nauseum.
But anyway, I don’t know whether this remark was blown out of proportion or not. But it doesn’t speak to me of major support for the Lisbon Treaty. It could just as well suggest that Ireland might propose an alternative to the Lisbon treaty. Personally, I wish they would. I think that Brian Cowen (Irish PM) ought to get a crowd of the nay-sayers from across the EU together and form a think-tank to propose a workable alternative.
