Jerome Around the World
By Fr. Dennis | June 9, 2003
My brothers have been telling me for a long time that they didn’t feel good about me going off to seminary with a 1995 Geo Metro that had 167K miles on it. So they convinced me to accept their help in getting a newer car. I put up a little more than a third of the money, and they came up with the rest. We paid cash, so the car is mine outright.
It’s a great little car. 1998 Chevy Prizm, 53K miles on it. JDPowers gives it 5 out of 5 for long term mechanical reliability. The car runs great. No black, white, or blue smoke out the tail pipe, no fluid leaks on the parking lot, no grimy splotches of sludge under the hood, all the hoses and belts tight and in great shape. And the AC is cold and instantaneous. I feel very good about having this car for the next 5 or 6 years.

Some people give their cars names. Mom always called her 1972 Ford Galaxy 500 by the name of “Bessie,” but I’ve never named a car before. I guess I always thought it was silly. Or maybe I’ve just never had a car that was worthy of having a name. This time, however, I’ve named my car. I call it “Jerome,” after St. Jerome, translator of the Scriptures from its original languages into Latin some time in the 4th and 5th centuries. Plus, I liked that B-52’s song:
Roam if you want to. Roam around the world.
I’ve always liked lame word play. Have you ever named a car? What names are most popular?
Jerome if you want to.
