Preparing for Seminary

By Fr. Dennis | June 9, 2003

As anyone who knows me can testify, I’ve been discerning over this for years and years. Not to be too dramatic, but finally the hour is at hand. On July 18, I will quit my job as a network design analyst for Venture Technologies. After a short road trip, I’ll move out of my apartment at the Colonial Village at Rocky Ridge complex in Birmingham, and spend a couple of weeks as a guest in my parents’ house in Memphis.

The Diocese of Memphis will be sending me to St. Meinrad School of Theology, but before I move to St. Meinrad in time for orientation on August 24, the Diocese will be having a retreat for all seminarians on August 11 to 13.

The hard part right now is focusing on my job. I want to do everything BUT my job. Don’t get me wrong, I love working here, but I’m so ready to leave. The people at the office here say I’m starting to act like a short-timer. I’m not willing to take on any new responsibilities, I haven’t been keeping up with product training, and I’m just not into this anymore. It’s like I’m back in high school and I have “senioritis.” A friend here at work compared me to a horse who’s heading for the barn. If you’ve ever ridden a horse, you’ll understand how they suddenly start doing nothing you want them to do except head for the barn. I’m going to try to do better, just as soon as I finish this blog entry. ;)
Have you ever been that way with a job, or some important responsibility, or a girl/boyfriend for that matter?

This quite an endeavor! I hope your studies don’t get in the way… I realize you are going from a full-time paying job to monthly stipend of only $100 or so a month, but… And I know that you’ll need to buy more than just toothpaste, shaving cream, a couple of pizzas, and a movie rental each month, but… How does this ” Does anyone want to help Dennis?” thing work? After all, some of us realize we’ll be helping you out from time to time, anyhow. That’s what happens to college students; including their parents/family. The student needs help some-times, like with insurance and gas, etc.. I do feel that your being in the seminary is just like going to college full time in the past. Is the “PayPal link” just today’s times…? Who came up with this type of thing? Wow! There! I put comments out there for all to see. Dennis, I think this is a neat project. Does it have the ability to track how many hits you get, and when? And, how long will this be something that fascinates…? Gee… How do I get to read others comments? Or do you see them only? Love DAD

Everyone can read all the comments, but I can edit them or delete them if someone should post something that is rude or insulting. Editorial power is cool.

I don’t know how long this will fascinate anyone. I have a friend who keeps one of these. I check in once every couple of weeks. There are blogs kept by various commentators on TechTV that I check every other day or so. I suppose if what I write is interesting, people will stop in and read it.

PayPal lets people put in a credit card number and transfer money to the recipient. Any gifts will show up as a credit in my bank acct, less a small transaction fee that PayPal gets for transferring the money.
