Home for the Weekend
By Fr. Dennis | June 14, 2003
I am at my parents’ house for the weekend. I love coming home. My mother is a great judge of things, and she is very clear on how things ought to be done. I like exchanging argument with her because her insight into what is sincere and what is excrement is, for the most part, dead on. I joked about hoping one day to be able to hire her as bookkeeper at my parish if I ever become a pastor. She said, “Within three weeks, you’d either fire me, or I’d have to quit.” I can just see it now. “Um, Mom, I have some bad news. We have to let you go. It’s just not working out.”
Or, which is more likely, “Dennis, I can’t work here anymore. You’re just too full of yourself.”
Also, I had breakfast with Fr. John Pecoraro this morning. I try to take him to breakfast whenever I’m home for the weekend. We solved all the Church’s problems over pancakes and sausage links. He just celebrated his one year anniversary as a priest, and he’s been a great support to me as I’ve been discerning my vocation. Turns out if everyone would just stop being disobedient and agree with me and Fr. John and the Holy Father in Rome, everything would be ok.
Now I’m off to the movies with my friend Steve Duffy. I have no idea what we’re going to see, but I hope it’s not a romantic comedy. He’s married to a nice girl, and I’m straight, so I don’t see the point in us going to a girl movie together. I hope we go see something with lots of explosions.
