Why Would Someone Die for a Guitar and a Felt Banner?
By Fr. Dennis | June 26, 2003
That’s the question a friend of mine asked me in an email today. Obviously, no one would. I certainly wouldn’t, and I fell in love with the mass because God gave me some modest skill with singing and playing guitar. The mass isn’t about the music or the art, whether we’re talking Handel’s Messiah versus Kumbayah, or whether it’s the Cistene Chapel versus the class of 1974’s burlap “we love jesus” banner. If it’s all about those things, then to hell with it, to paraphrase Flannery O’Conner.
Maybe so many Catholic Americans are not willing to die for the faith because they have not been presented with a faith worth dying for.
