Finding a Mass in Miami

By Fr. Dennis | July 20, 2003

I’m visiting a friend in Miami. She and her sisters kids have gone out for the day, and I needed to find a mass. Since they aren’t Catholic, they don’t have the same understanding of Sunday obligation that I have, so I didn’t wake them up this morning to take a shower and ask for a ride to mass. By the time they were all up and out the door, I seem to have missed all the nearby masses.

I found a mass being celebrated several miles from here at 4:30 today, but the Miami buses run all day long, so I’ll be just fine.

The thing is, it’s in Latin. You’d think it would be in English or Spanish, but all those masses are over with for the day and it just so happens that this is the Latin indult mass which is at 4:30. I know it will meet my Sunday obligation. I just hope that I’m not so lost following along that I can’t pray properly.

If it were in Spanish, at least I’d be familiar enough with the rite, and with the Spanish language, not to get too lost.

After mass I’m going to dinner with some friends. My host won’t be joining us because she and the kids are up in Ft. Lauderdale visiting relatives. I expect this to be a fun day.

UPDATE: It wasn’t a Tridentine mass. It was in Latin, but it was the normal Pauline mass celebrated in most parishes around the world. So I was able to follow it, even though I didn’t know all the prayers.
