Another One Bites the Dust
By Fr. Dennis | March 7, 2006
For someone who is supposed to be soooooo smart with technology, I have turned out to be quite the genius.
I’m currently doing all my homework and keeping up with my email using my 8-year-old laptop that I bought used for $120 from my previous employer before I entered seminary, and I have to say it’s worth every penny. And why have I been using my 8-year-old laptop for going on a month now? Because I’m a genius. That’s why.
My big and powerful PC burned up its motherboard on February 8. I needed a new motherboard.
I ordered motherboard and waited a week for it to arrive. Then, when it didn’t solve my problem, I discovered that this new motherboard required a much faster processor than the one I currently owned.
I ordered processor and waited a week for it to arrive. Then, when it didn’t solve my problem, I discovered that this new motherboard and processor combination required a much more powerful power supply than the one I currently owned.
I ordered power supply and waited a week for it to arrive. Then, when it didn’t solve my problem, I discovered that I had made a mistake in installing the motherboard…a mistake which caused me to ruin it permanently. It has to do with where the motherboard gets screwed into place inside the case. I did it wrong and caused a short circuit. Another motherboard bites the dust.
So now I have ordered a 3rd motherboard, and since it’s not in stock, I’ll have to wait a week or so before they ship it and another week or so after that for it to arrive.
I’ve learned what not to do when it arrives, and all the other components should be compatible, now that I have the new processor and power supply. Including the motherboard I’ve ruined, I’ve spent $350.
Some friends have asked me why I didn’t just go buy a Dell. But this is a computer that I built myself. I know all the components in it. And when it works (when, not if), it will be much better than a low-end Dell. $350 is a GREAT price for a brand new computer, which is basically what I will have. WHEN IT WORKS. EVENTUALLY!
