Wal-Mart Bad
By Fr. Dennis | March 28, 2006
With the recent announcement that Wal-Mart would begin to stock and sell Plan-B (the abortion drug that a woman can take up to 3-days after having sex to make sure that any baby that might have resulted would be quickly disposed of), many of the guys here at the seminary (but not all–shame on them) have agreed to stop spending any money at Wal-Mart.
No groceries. No DVDs. No oil-changes. No haircuts. No photo processing. No eyeglasses in under an hour. No drugs. Nothing.
My personal challenge about this is that I just started taking a new medication. It’s expensive and it took just about a month to get approval from the insurance company. And I had it filled with Wal-Mart’s mail-order division. Today I looked for an alternative.
I checked the web and found the website for Pharmacists for Life International. They have all kinds of information of interest to pharmacists regarding conscience clauses and pending legislation and court cases. They also have a “find a pharmacist” section.
They list 7 pharmacists who “have pledged to abide by the PFLI Code of Ethics and aver they do not dispense any abortifacient drugs or devices, nor do they refer for the same.” One of them happens to be in Richmond, IN.
Richmond Apothecary
David Rokosz, RPh.
I called and spoke to David. He is a pro-life pharmacist and a Catholic. He is a member of the parish in Richmond and supports vocations. He was very happy that I called him and seemed happy for the chance to help St. Meinrad Seminarians. He said that in addition to walk-ins, he can handle mail-order no problem, and can even handle the weird, expensive bio-tech drugs (like the new drug I take).
Any seminarian, or anyone else, should feel free to call him, or fax him their prescription information, or email him (go to their website for contact info).

LOCKING THE BARN AFTER THE HORSE HAS BEEN STOLEN
In the above referenced announcement is this quote: \”We expected more states to require us to sell emergency contraceptives in the months ahead,\” said Ron Chumiuk, vice president of Pharmacy for Wal-Mart, in a statement. \”Because of this, and the fact that this is an FDA-approved product, we feel it is difficult to justify being the country\’s only major pharmacy chain not selling it.\”
I hate to be the Grouch/Cynic/ Pessimist on this blog, (at least until Bill gets back) but did anyone notice that Wal-Mart was the only major pharmacy chain not selling plan-B? Shouldn\’t we have been giving Wal-Mart all our business while they were holding the line? It surely would have been easier for pro-life folks to patronize Wal-Mart pharmacies exclusively while Wal-Mart was on our side, than it will be now to convince folks not to give their business to ANY major pharmacy chain. It seems to me it is our fault that Wal-mart blinked in the face of pro-choice \”women\’s health advocates.\”

Several guys here at the seminary feel the way you do. And almost everyone here did a lot of buying from Wal-Mart before hand, almost exculsively. And many guys are not participating in any kind of boycott for the very same reasons you gave.
