A Tie at the Finish Line
By Fr. Dennis | November 1, 2007
Today is an important day. Yes, it’s the Solemnity of All Saints, which is, of course, the most important reason why today is important. A less important reason is that today is the last day in which I will ever be required to wear a tie.
Of all the useless fashion trends in the scope of human history, the stupid tie is one that just will not go away. But finally, I’ve found my way out, and I’ll never have to wear one again.
Thank God for Holy Orders!

I saw the blurb about your ordination to the transitional diaconate on the diocesan website today. May God continue to bless you as you get ever closer to joining His priesthood!

My dear Dennis,
Please don’t tell me you are becoming a priest just so you won’t have to wear a tie. Computer dweebs don’t usually wear ties either and they don’t have to listen to confessions.
My dear pastor has also told me a white collar can be pretty uncomfortable, too:)

I only wear them to Latin High Mass and funerals. And I only go to High Mass at Christmas.
I (sans wife and kids) will be in Memphis for the ordination. I look forward to seeing you make your escape from the world of ties.

I can tell you are excited about being a deacon, and are looking forward to the priesthood. But as a friend and brother in Christ, please do not get caught up in all the vanity of the priesthood. Remember that the collar is not what makes you a priest, but what you do when serving God to build the kingdom is what makes you a priest.
Wear the collar, but please do not make it the focus of your vocation…

Well, frankly Dennis, the only time I can ever remember you wearing a tie it was a blue leather tie and you were wearing it over a sweatshirt with a bunny on it.

Janet, you gotta be telling stories… Dennis wouldn’t wear leather. Uncle Jim: I will wear Tie, shirt, slacks, sport coat and, I will break my hillbilly ways and wear shoes and socks, too. Bill, We’ll see you in Memphis tonight.

Heh.
Well, Janet, I hope that somewhere there is someone who remembers your questionable fashion choices from the 60’s or early 70’s.

I can’t wait to meet Bill in person. I think I’ll take David’s advice and just whoop up on him.

Ha Dennis! Nobody is that old, but my kids love to laugh about them and so do I! Remarkably, I’ve seen my children wear some of the same ugly fashions.

Janet

I am also looking forward to seeing Bill, whom you swear I must have met, but I don’t remember.

Of all the reasons to become a priest, that’s the best one I’ve ever heard. Love it.

Dennis,
Congratulations on your ordination as a deacon. I was there at the ordination but could not stay for the reception. It’s hard to believe that it has been this long, and I’m glad to see you’ve made it this far. My your ministry lead you and many others to eternal life.
In Christ,
David

I was there and it was a very moving experience. May he continue to be an influence on us all. Even his ole dad.

I wasn’t there, but you were in my prayers all weekend! God bless you in your ministry. What’s all this about a leather tie?

Remember the “Come as You Are” notion should never include a tie.
Ok, I am another totally anti tie person.
In my case, it comes from 12 years of forced wearing ties in school.
There is another option here. Just refuse to wear a tie. It works for me!
