Simply Enchanting
By Fr. Dennis | November 27, 2007
I usually don’t write about movies without having anything theological to say about them. However, I make an exception today. Last week I saw a really cute Disney movie called “Enchanted,” about a fairy tale princess who is banished from animated fairy tale land to make her way in New York City. The scene below was one of my favorites.

At the risk of passing into the abhorrent “Jesus-is-my-boyfriend” territory, I’ll dabble in the theology of this song.
One of my favorite books is “Captivating” by John & Stasi Eldredge. The Eldredges propose that a woman desires three things at the very core of her soul: to play and irreplaceable role in a larger story, to unveil beauty, and to have her heart romanced. All three of these questions (Am I beautiful? Do you delight in me? Do love me?) must be taken to and answered by God first.
In the song “How Do You Know” in Enchanting, these lyrics really caught my eye:
He’ll find his own way to tell you
With the little things he’ll do
That’s how you know
That’s how you know!
I know that anytime I begin to feel distance from God, all I need to do is ask for a special something from God to remind me that I am loved. It never fails that I see things that God uses to whisper to my heart that I am loved.

There ya go. Not bad for a Methodist, huh?

No, it’s pretty good for a Methodist.
Does your husband know you’re dating Jesus?

My big kids LOVED that movie. I was gratified to learn that it was one of those rare movies which turn out to be at least as funny as the trailer.
