New Saint Meinrad Seminary Rector to Be Announced Tonight
By Fr. Dennis | January 31, 2008
I don’t think I mentioned it here, but the current President-Rector of Saint Meinrad School of Theology has decided that now would be a good time to ask the Archabbot for a different assignment. Fr. Mark O’Keefe, having played a major role in turning the school around and in running a $40 capital campaign that has resulted in major renovations, announced in October that this would be his last year as head of the school.
Tonight, after several weeks of discernment and some final meetings this afternoon and evening, Archabbot Justin will be announcing the name of the new rector. He is deciding between two of the monks on the school faculty: Fr. Godfrey Mullen and Fr. Denis Robinson. (By the way, Fr. Denis is formerly a priest of the Diocese of Memphis and was once known to Cathedral parishioners as Fr. Lynn Robinson.)
Speculation has been running high in the seminary community, and our satirical daily student newspaper has been running a series of “presidential campaign” parodies to help work out some of the tension we’re all feeling. Of course, since this is my last year at this school as well as Fr. Mark’s, I don’t really have a preference. Both men have their strengths and weaknesses.
Archabbot Justin assures us that as soon as the decision is made, there will be an announcement to the community and it will be public, so I’ll have it here. Might shoot an email to Whispers also. In case they’re interested.
