Betrothed
By Fr. Dennis | April 4, 2008
Just like last fall, when I made promises of obedience, celibacy, and fidelity before I was ordained a deacon, last night I made similar promises prior to my priesthood ordination. It’s a lot like a formal betrothal, as opposed to a modern engagement. I had to write out long-hand my declaration of freedom in advance. Then, last night, my classmates and I professed publicly our fidelity to the Church’s magesterium, our obedience to our superiors (bishops), and to the life of celibacy. Then we had to sign the documents on the altar, where they remained during the rest of the mass. In a way, it’s very odd to sign away your freedom and leave it on the altar.
And also, it’s very freeing, too.

The ceremony is very inspirational, and convincing… the men who signed those papers and made those promises will forever remember the freedom they transferred to their church and us; and those who attended that Mass will never forget it either. Now, onto the Graduation and the Ordination, and then onto the Assignment in Memphis.
