Bibles for China My Foot
By Fr. Dennis | April 4, 2008
I’m so angry right now I could spit. I just got some junk mail asking me to help send Bibles to the underground Christians in China. You know the routine. Christians living in fear… worst persecution since the times of the Roman Colosseum… communist government atheists doing the will of the devil… the dragon beast in revelation is a lot like a Chinese dragon and there’s a connection… blah blah blah. They want to raise money to send Bibles to China.
The charity raising the money was Nora Lam Chinese Ministries International. You’ll notice I did not link to the charity’s website, but to their rating page on Charity Navigator, which is “America’s premier independent charity evaluator.” They report all the financials of a charity, how much is spent on their mission, how much is spent on administration, how much is spent on fundraising, and also how much the officers of the charity earn. While Nora Lam’s group had a revenue of $3.6 million in 2007, they spent only half of that money on their mission, dubious as it is. They spend a full 29% on fundraising, and Joseph Lam, presumably related to Nora Lam, earned $183K last year.
So they sent this fundraising junk mail, and said they included a $10 check in the hopes I would send it back to them along with my gift. Whatever.
Please don’t give these people anything. They’re the worst kind of Christian charity. They are like the shepherds in Ezekiel 34 who are pasturing themselves on their flocks.

a lot of junk ministries
‘follow the money’ tells a strange tale sometimes
donor - know to whom you’re donating - check them out
it is good for you to give
be sure the money gets to where you intended it
