Are the South Park Creators Pro-Life?

By Fr. Dennis | April 10, 2008

UPDATE: Originally, I used a video from YouTube, which was deleted due to copyright infringement. Turns out that the South Park people make all the clips available on their own website, so I’ve updated this entry.

You decide based on this clip from last night’s South Park episode.

To set you up, Eric Cartman, South Park’s amoral sociopath, is so good at helping his classmates pass the standardized tests, that the Denver school district asks him to teach math at an inner city high school. He arrives at the school and is given a class of mostly Latino kids and decides to inspire them the way Jaime Escalante (portrayed by Edward James Olmos) did in the movie “Stand and Deliver.” Only Eric decides that instead of teaching the kids to actually do calculus, he would teach them what he taught his classmates back in South Park: how to cheat.

So is there a pro-life message in there?

WARNING: When the video ends, there is a link that gives you a chance to watch the entire episode. I do not recommend watching any episode of South Park in its entirety. I don’t take any responsibility for the rest of the content on the South Park website.

Well, there was the episode where Cartman trafficked in aborted fetuses and fed them to Christopher Reeve for the stem cells. Which I suppose was a pro-life message in its way.

Well, I certainly hope it was a pro-life message. It’s about time Stone and Parker got serious about this crucial issue in society and showed abortion for what it really is “cheating he/she out of life.”

    “Video no longer available”, dangit!

I didn’t get to see this, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there were allusions to pro-life mentality. South Park is definitely on record as stirring up ANY kind of political debate.

I remember discussions by my parents back in the day over Star Trek: The Next Generation. One week would have an episode blantanly viewing the pro-choice movement, and the next week would have an episode where Jordi questions an alien society about their genetic purification practices. Because he was blind, what if his parents had chosen to get rid of him, rather than let him become the great acheiver that he was? I believe that there are writers who stick it to the mainstream when they can in an effort to promote their “unpopular” ethics, especially since every day we are corrupted more and more by what popular media would deem “right”.

Who handed them the scepter, anyway? Thanks for letting me rant.
