« Youth 2000 Weekend in Memphis | Main | South Park Clip Update »

Joyeux Noelle

By Fr. Dennis | April 15, 2008

Catholic youth minister and Memphis musician Noelle Garcia (currently residing in Lansing MI, but hopefully not forever), is performing in two free concerts this weekend in Memphis. So if you’re around, you should go to one. I had the chance to work with her on a couple of occasions, and I can say from experience that she’s a really first-rate singer / musician / songwriter.

I remember way back in 1999 (or was it 2000) when she and some of her high school youth group friends formed the first Catholic praise and worship ensemble in Memphis. The group was dedicated to the patronage of Saint Dominic Savio.

The concert info:

Friday, April 18
St. Brigid Catholic Church
7801 Lowrance Rd
Memphis (Hickory Hill/G’town area)
7:00 PM

Saturday, April 19
St. William Catholic Church
4932 Easley Ave
Millington
7:00 PM

I’m going to the St. William event because their youth group, with whom I had the pleasure of working for a week last summer, is having a Pasta Bar fund raiser right before the concert.

I hope we see more Catholics doing this kind of music. The trouble is - I think a lot of traditionally minded Catholics wrongly dismiss this music as “protestant”. A very weird attitude, if you ask me, as no one says it has to be played at Mass.
