I’m Off to the Cathedral
By Fr. Dennis | June 7, 2008
Ordination to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ is a little more than 2 hours away. Eventually, I’ll have to change the “About” section of this blog, but that can wait till next week.
In the meantime, pray for me, and pray for all the other men being ordained as Catholic priests today in the US, especially my friends Joseph (Indianapolis), Aaron (Indianapolis) and Matthew (Phoenix).

O Jesus, our great High Priest,
Hear our humble prayers on behalf of your priest, Father Dennis
Give him a deep faith
a bright and firm hope
and a burning love
which will ever increase
in the course of his priestly life.
In his loneliness, comfort him
In his sorrows, strengthen him
In his frustrations, point out to him
that it is through suffering that the soul is purified,
and show him that he is needed by the Church,
he is needed by souls,
he is needed for the work of redemption.
O loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests,
take to your heart your son who is close to you
because of his priestly ordination,
and because of the power which he has received
to carry on the work of Christ
in a world which needs him so much.
Be his comfort, be his joy, be his strength,
and especially help him
to live and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy. Amen

Congratulations, Father Dennis! I thought about you many times yesterday. May your life be truly In Personnae Christae.
(My latin spelling was always bad–hopefully nothing feminine implied there…)

In Milestones, Joseph Ratzinger writes of his own ordination:
“On the day of our first Holy Mass, our parish church of Saint Oswald gleamed in all its splendor, and the joy that almost palpably filled the whole place drew everyone there into the most living mode of “active participation” in the sacred event, but this did not require any external busyness. We were invited to bring the first blessing into people’s homes, and everywhere we were received even by total strangers with a warmth and affection I had not thought possible until that day. In this way I learned firsthand how earnestly people wait for a priest, how much they long for the blessing that flows from the power of the sacrament. The point was not my own or my brother’s person. What could we two young men represent all by ourselves to the many people we were now meeting? In us they saw persons who had been touched by Christ’s mission and had been empowered to bring his nearness to men. Precisely because we ourselves were not the point, a friendly human relationship could develop very quickly.”
I am but a stranger but you have my sincere and heartfelt thanks and warm wishes in your vocation. Congratulations!

major congrats on your ordination Fr. Dennis. Now all the things our amazing professors taught us at St Meinrad go right out the window and you begin to be led by the Holy Spirit and become the servant priest that God and your Bishop and your parishioners need you to be.
Seriously, I couldn’t be happier for you. My prayers for your ministry continue.

Hello, I’m also late. James was thinking it was late June. I have a gift for you, and I’m sorry we missed the mass. May God bless you abundantly! Peace, Bridgett
