Gay Marriage?
By Fr. Dennis | November 6, 2008
With the passage of Proposition 8 in California this week, which modifies the California State Constitution so as to define marriage as being between one man and one woman, gay marriage is in the news again.
Some people think that Proposition 8 prohibits persons with same sex attraction from getting married, and that, therefore, it violates the “equal protection under the law” concept already in the state Constitution. But it does not prevent people with same sex attraction from getting married.
The Church is very clear on this, and so are the laws of most countries. Persons with same sex attraction have the same natural right to marry as anyone else. They have always been allowed to marry for as long as marriage has existed, and in fact persons with same sex attraction have been getting married from time immemorial.
A man with same sex attraction may marry any willing woman he chooses. Likewise, a woman with same sex attraction may marry any willing man she chooses.
It’s the same right any other person has. It’s the same right that people have always had.
